·        Discuss the evolution of university organization.  Include corporate origins, modification of board control, faculty and alumni participation, administrative structure, academic organization, and administrative organization.

 

 

 

·        What in your opinion, are the major obstacles to success for college students?  Develop fully your answer.

 

 

 

·        Discuss in depth, two of the most important issues facing higher education in Tennessee.

 

 

 

·        Due Process is considered to be a hallmark of American democracy.  Discuss the origin of due process, how it has been brought into education, procedural due process, and substantive due process.

 

 

 

·        Alternative organizational models have been described in the literature as the bureaucratic model, collegial model, political model, and organized anarchy model, each emphasizing a different aspect of the university.  Explain each and tell how decision-making is accomplished in each.

 

·        Affirmative action has been an intensely controversial concept in many areas of American life.  Faculty employment has been more controversial because of the crowded federal regulations and requirements.

·        (A)  Discuss the history of affirmative action.

·        (B)  List some guidelines institutions should consider in establishing affirmative action policies.

 

·        Discuss the:

·        (A)  Historical evolution of the university organization.

·        (B)  models of academic governance,

·        (1)  the academic bureaucracy in the institution.

·        (2)  the university collegium model, collegial decision making process, faculty’s professional authority.

·        (3)  the university as a political system.

 

 

·        Throughout its history the educational system in the United States has been greatly influenced by external affairs.  Describe at least three examples of this phenomenon and discuss each of their results on American education.

 

 

·        Leaders in all fields including education should utilize the results of research when making important decisions. 

(A)   Demonstrate your knowledge of research by: defining and giving examples of the following:  Primary source, secondary source, qualitative research, and quantitative research.

(B)   Give the purpose and an example of the following types of research:  Basic, Applied, Evaluation, and Action.

 

·        Public education in America has been shaped by many individuals; however, in each century there have been one or two people who have played inordinately, significant roles in determining the direction public education would take in this country.  Such individuals might be viewed as the giants in American education.  For each of the three centuries (the eighteenth century, the nineteenth century, and the twentieth century), select one individual and discuss his/her impact on American education.  Cite specific examples of the results of their efforts.
