Master of Education Curriculum and Instruction Specialization: English as a Second Language
Every year, more students whose first language is not English are enrolling public schools. To meet these students' needs and those of the school districts where they are enrolled, the MTSU College of Education and Behavioral Science offers a pre-K through 12 add-on licensure and master's program in Teaching English as a Second Language. These programs conform to the State of Tennessee licensure standards for teachers of English as a Second Language and address all the main areas of proficiency. The M.Ed. and Add-on Endorsement are dynamic, interdisciplinary, cross-curricular programs combining resources in several departments. Students will take courses in linguistics, foreign language acquisition, and the elements of English as well as courses in teaching strategies and methods appropriate for the ESL classroom. The practicum will involve experience at the Pre-K to 12 grade level and meet all requirements for Tennessee licensure.
