Requirements for the Master of Education:
At least one semester prior to the anticipated date of
registration, all applicants seeking the Master of Education degree must submit
the following credentials to the Graduate Studies Office:
- an application for admission;
- an application fee;
- official transcripts from each college or university attended (see
Graduate Catalog for special
requirements);
- three letters of reference;
- one assessment required for Administration and Supervision majors (contact
the Educational Leadership Department for details);
- a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English (see
Graduate Catalog for special
requirements); and
- a satisfactory score on the PRAXIS II -
Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) Test, Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or on the
Miller Analogies Test (MAT).
The final step in the admissions procedure is acceptance
by the Educational Leadership Department, conditionally or unconditionally,
with approval of the College of Graduate Studies. Departmental approval
includes a review and approval by
the departmental Graduate Admission Board, which meets one time during the fall,
spring, and summer semester.
The time limit for completion of the degree is counted
from the date of matriculation. The time limit is six (6) years.
A candidate for the Master of Education degree must:
- be admitted to the College of Graduate Studies (All students must be
admitted to a program prior to the completion of 12 hours of course work.);
- hold a bachelor's degree;
- complete 33 semester hours with more than 30 percent of the total degree
hours dually listed as undergraduate/graduate hours (Students should refer to
the appropriate major for specific requirements.);
- hold the appropriate teacher license (The licensure requirement may be
waived under special circumstances);
- file an Advancement to Candidacy Form prior to completing 24 semester
hours;
- successfully complete a written comprehensive examination (may be taken no
more than twice).
